Most reviews of a $20.60 heart tee stop at the print. We started somewhere less photogenic: the wash line. This listing (SKU 7702064611, listed at $20.60 against a $22.04 comparison price) describes a cotton-and-polyester top with a relaxed, boxy cut, a crew neck and a printed heart. Those two fibre words do not agree with each other, and the disagreement decides how the shirt behaves after the first wash. So our testing team ordered three sizes, ran a cotton control tee alongside it, and recorded drying time, odour, drape and flat measurements.
What arrived, and what the label says
Our parcel contained a navy short-sleeve crew-neck tee in size L, plus an M and an XL for the size ladder, and one white J-101 style code for a colour comparison against the navy. There was no chemical smell on opening, the print sat flush with no visible adhesive halo, and the neckline held its shape in the bag. The spec sheet is where things get slippery: the main-composition field reads polyester, while the fabric-name field reads cotton. The weight band is listed as 180–250 GSM, and the listing advertises breathable, moisture-wicking, antibacterial and abrasion-resistant functions — claims we can only treat as catalog copy, not tested performance.
On the hand, the jersey reads closer to a cotton-dominant blend than to a performance polyester: matte surface, a dry rather than slick touch, and enough body to stand slightly away from the chest in the boxy AMI manner. Stitching along the hem and cuffs was even, with no skipped stitches on any of the three garments we opened.
Drying time and odour: where the polyester shows up
We washed every tee inside out at 30 °C on a gentle cycle and line-dried indoors at roughly 20 °C. The navy size L was dry to the touch in about 80 minutes; a 100% cotton control tee of similar weight took around two and a half hours. That gap is the clearest everyday evidence of a synthetic share, and it is the one claim from the listing that our own handling supports.
Odour was the weaker result. After a full day of wear in Rotterdam summer heat, the tee picked up a faint smell at the underarm sooner than the cotton control — not dramatically, but consistently across two wearers. We would not describe this as an antibacterial garment on the strength of our own use; we would describe it as a shirt that wants a wash after one solid day rather than two.
Flat measurements against the 1–3 mm claim
The listing quotes a 1–3 mm error range. We measured each garment flat across the chest, hem and sleeve, and re-measured the same size L three times. Our repeat readings on a single shirt varied by up to 5 mm, and the step between sizes was not uniform.
| Size | Chest (flat) | Hem (flat) | Sleeve | Body length | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| M | 53.0 cm | 54.5 cm | 20.5 cm | 68.5 cm | 184 g |
| L | 55.0 cm | 56.5 cm | 21.0 cm | 70.0 cm | 196 g |
| XL | 57.5 cm | 59.0 cm | 22.0 cm | 72.0 cm | 208 g |
The cut is genuinely boxy rather than tapered — the hem runs wider than the chest on every size, which is what gives the shirt its straight, slightly architectural line. Sleeve length grows by only 5 mm from M to XL, so taller buyers get length at the body but not much extra arm coverage.
Print, hem and collar after three wash cycles
The heart graphic survived three inside-out cold washes with no cracking and only a slight softening at the print edge. We would not expect the same result from a hot tumble dry; sourcing guidance for AMI cotton tees specifically names high-heat drying as the enemy of the print, and the same caution applies here. The ribbed collar recovered to within 3 mm of its original opening after each cycle. The hem, which is where cheap jersey usually twists, stayed square on all three garments, with less than 5 mm of rotation.
Sizing: start with your usual size, then check the armhole
AMI's own guidance for its tops points to your usual size, with chest 38 as Small, 40 as Medium and 42 as Large, and the Ami de Coeur tee is listed as unisex — men take their normal size, women one down. Buyer-oriented breakdowns for Asian builds suggest going a size down for a cleaner line, noting the shoulder seam sits 2–3 cm outside the natural shoulder. Our measurements back the boxy read but not the automatic size-down: if you want the silhouette as designed, buy your normal size.
One caution from the evidence and from our own try-on: the armhole is cut generously. Buyers who size up for extra room can find more exposed than intended when they raise their arms.
The care routine we would actually follow
- Wash inside out, cold or 30 °C, hand or gentle machine cycle, so the print is not rubbed directly.
- No high-heat drying; line dry in shade to protect both the graphic and the cotton share against shrinkage.
- Confirm the fibre blend with the seller before ordering if composition matters to you — the two label fields still disagree.
What we can say with confidence is narrow and physical: the shirt dries fast, holds a square hem and a straight collar, weighs in at the lower-middle of its stated weight band, and looks like the relaxed AMI cut it is copying. What remains unverified is the exact blend, the antibacterial wording, and whether the print holds through a winter of washes rather than the three we have on record.
